You're right, it isn't sensible. Viacom won't pursue their copyrights in
printed material because there are so many people violating it, that it
would cost them way more than they want to spend if they tried to
prosecute everyone. We're talking massive amounts of fan newsletters and
zines, fanclubs, regular publications devoted to Trek, and even magazines
such as TV Guide and Entertainment Weekly. The only reason that Viacom is
doing this on the internet is because they don't realize how many sites
there are, and they are mad because of some security leaks at
Paramount--causing some of their secrets to get out. Once the secret gets
out, the internet does what it was meant to do, and sends that information
around the world. They think that they can keep their precious secrets
safe if they can wipe Trek off the internet. What they don't know yet is
that no matter how hard they try, they will never succeed. For every page
that they shut down, several more will spring up to take their place.
Viacom will never be victorious.
